Energy from Waste roadshow arrives in Boston
Residents can find out more about the proposed new Energy from Waste facility as the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership arrives in Boston.
Through the roadshow, the Partnership aims to explain to residents how more of the county’s non-recyclable waste can be diverted away from landfill – avoiding multi-million pound EU fines – to make use of its potential to produce energy via a new treatment facility.
The touring trailer will be in Boston Market Place on Wednesday 16 July from 9am until 3pm.
The roadshow is an opportunity for people all over the county, and particularly those who will live closest to the planned facility in North Hykeham, to find out more about the technology that will help to solve the county’s waste challenge. Councillor Lewis Strange, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership and Lincolnshire County Council Executive Member for Waste, said:
“We hope people will come along and chat to us about the Energy from Waste facility in more detail. There are many benefits that people may not be aware of and we may be able to dispel some myths. We want to hear everyone’s thoughts and ensure that people are fully informed on what promises to be an exciting and crucial project for the county.
“Waste contains vital energy which is being wasted by ending up in landfill, where the substances break down and pollute the atmosphere. The new facility will harness this energy and put it to good use. We anticipate the facility will handle 150,000 tonnes of waste each year to meet Lincolnshire’s needs and the energy this produces could meet the requirements of local businesses or homes. The facility will also create a number of skilled jobs and help in the fight against climate change by cutting methane emission from landfill and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.”
The month of road shows has already taken in the Lincolnshire Show, Thorpe-on-the-Hill, Skellingthorpe, North and South Hykeham, Lincoln, Sleaford, Skegness, Aubourn, Gainsborough, Horncastle, Louth and Stamford. It will visit Boston, Spalding and Grantham, before finishing at Heckington Show on 26 and 27 July.
The location for the Energy from Waste facility in North Hykeham, which was first identified in the Local Waste Plan, is situated to the south of Lincoln on Whisby Road, just off the A46, and is next to an existing landfill site. Last month, award-winning architects Studio E were appointed to create a facility that will be “aesthetically refined and environmentally responsible”.

The Lincolnshire Waste Partnership consists of the County Council, the seven local Councils and the Environment Agency, with the aim of delivering sustainable waste management services to the community.Lincolnshire produces around 360,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year, a figure which is growing annually by about 1.7%. Last year, the county recycled and composted 40% of our waste, with the remaining 60% being sent to landfill.
